Printing over network problem
«

Not sure if this is where I should post; however I was recently given a Brother MFC 8500 laser printer, fax and scanner. Of course, when I plugged it into my iMac, it worked immediately. And of course when I attempted to print something from my TiBook, it had no problems. My problem is I have a roommate on a PC and while he can connect wirelessly to the internet, I haven't been able to print from his computer. I went into my Network preferences and turned on windows sharing and printer sharing. I believe it was in the windows sharing that I was given an IP address to enter in the PC. I attempted and still nothing... what am I doing wrong? BTW, he has a laptop running XP.
Thanks,
Martha

Two things to check
First - make sure he has the driver for the printer installed already.
Second - see if he can connect to your machine over the network. Turn on Windows Sharing in your Sharing Preference pane and you'll see the address to connect with. Then on his machine go to Start -> Run -> and type the address to try and connect with (ex. \\192.168.1.4\cwaldrip). Your account on your machine should be on by default when you enable Windows Sharing, but if not you can turn it on by clicking the Accounts button in the preferences. On the windows machine you should be prompted to enter a username and password (your username and password on your Mac).
If he's got the driver installed, and can connect to your Mac... we'll have to think of something else.
