Hello all,

I have my G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz Tower.  I want to put in another HD, but am not sure what drive to put into it.  Prices seem to be dirt cheap these days and would love to put in a 500 or a 750 to had to the 250 Gig that came in it.

I saw this deal:

500GB Maxtor QuickView 500 SATA I/II 3.0G Hard Drive - Enterprise class, 16MB Buffer, 7200RPM, 5yr Warranty. **SPECIAL OFFER, Limit 5 per customer** (MAX3H500F0S5)   $129.99
Same Day

That was on OWC, and we saw something similar but with a serial number of MAX7H700 etc for $10 cheaper at Frys.com

So is a SATA II drive something i can install in my computer?

Thanks for the advice!

Mike

BTW...advice on who NOT to buy from?

You should be fine with either drive. SATA II generally means that it allows for faster access speeds (1.5Gb/sec v. 3Gb/sec). There's probably more to it than that, but either drive will work.

HI Mike,

I've bought a number of things from OWC and I like them a lot.  I don't know
Fry's but most people say good things about them.  OWC has good customer support.

Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it

MicroCenter typically has a pile of cheap Samsung drives.  I have a G5 dual 2G, the unit when I got it used had a 160g in it, I got 2 of the generic SATA II Samsungs (about a year ago) 250g for about $79 ea.  Slapped them both in, put the 160 in an external drive, and life is good -- no problems at all since then.

I wouldnt expect any issues with the drives as long as you stick to some major brands (Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, etc) and it really doesnt matter who you buy it from (local or mail order).

Good Luck.
