The built-in CD/DVD reader/writer in my G5 seems to have been working fine until I tried to install Final Cut Express today.

The DVDs would be ejected a few seconds after they were inserted. No icons would appear on the desktop.

I tried inserting the System disk and the same thing happened.

Other CDs and DVDs that I have tried seem to work OK.

I tried the same DVDs in my G4 PowerBook and they mount OK.

I hope somebody can come up with something other than NIWW (No Idea What's Wrong)!

Did you check for software updates?

This one says it is for hardware compatability.  You didn't say what version you have, so I just guessed.

Both the G5 desktop and the G4 PowerBook have been updated to 10.4.9

Sorry I forgot the link last time.  Check this out...you may have to updtate the final cut express software.  It is not unusual for new software to need updates right away.

I don't believe that it is a Final Cut Express problem since the Mac Operating System DVD also is not accepted.

It might be if the software wreaks havoc on your machine.  I remember when windows 98 first came out.  I had a sony cdrom that was incompatable and my simple upgrade accidentally deleted my hard drive and all my data.

It is possible that having something on your machine that is incompatible might cause a problem more widespread.

I can't install the application on my system because of the CD/DVD problem.
If I don't have the application on my system already it is impossible to update it.

If you dont have the software on your system, then it can't be the fault of the software. did you try repairing permissions in the disk utility?
