I'm planning on upgrading my CPU in my G4 "Sawtooth" AGP desktop. This is an interim solution, so I'm not planning on a big upgrade.
There seem to be a number of folks doing it and I was wondering if I could solicit some opinions on which is better:
Newertech, Sonnet, PowerLogics, or Mercury?

Honestly, if it's an interim solution I'd simply look at the price. All of the companies use the same PowerPC chips. The differences are minor from there.

Personally, I've used upgrades from NewerTech and Sonnet with no problems.

Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it

I went from 350Mhz to 1.2Ghz on a Sawtooth using a Sonnet Processor card.  Very simple and quick upgrade.

Only suggestion that I can give is to go slow and deliberate.  It's a simple upgrade, but there are a mass of pins on the bottom of the card that need to mate correctly.  Seating it squarely and gently seems to be the trick.

I think that you can even get a Dual proc upgrade card for this unit if you wanted to go that way.  I think that the old Sawtooths have plenty of longevity being used as a file servers or iTunes media servers.

Then again, we need to see what iTV is all about and what you need to use as the base media server.

I never got back to anybody on this but I went for the $199 Mercury card from OWC (cheapest one). After I did a fresh install of OS 10.3.9, I got amazing results! Best investment I ever made. Everything is faster, including web pages - go figure.

John --

How fast of an upgrade did you go for? .. You should be able to load 10.4 on it just fine ..

I did an article in our newsletter about my experience.  I preferred the mercury.
