Well .. here's a suggestion ..
There are better mechanisms for "surveillance" than a day light oriented video camera and a Mac. If you go to Microcenter (or Fry's) there are small cameras that are more sensative to low light conditions that never blink .. and there are recorders (digital?) that you can use that are especially crafted for this kind of work. I think if there's no movement from frame to frame, they compress highly, once they detect movement, they capture in "less compressed" mode. This allows for days if not weeks of information to be kept on hard disks and spooled off when needed (think like a TIVO for surveillance).
