I have a friend that's had enough with Dell notebooks and loves my macs. He wants to switch but unfortunately he is a realtor and just about every app in that industry is Windows only.

Are there any GPS applications that will allow you to download info from a GPS device right into your mac natively? I know that Parallels and bootcamp may be an option.

Thanks

Jesus,
You should look at a web site called:    www.gpsy.com

It's a Macintosh software solution for gps. You download their software for $60, buy a map database (they have lots of suggestions), buy a GPS unit (they recommend quite a few), and buy/build a cable between the Mac & GPS unit.
Good luck.

Thank you John

It appears that there is nothing available for the mac. I had seen the site that you mentioned however that product is made by a hobbist not by a real software company. The web site looks ancient (the screen shots are from the System OS not OSX) and I read in other sites that the support isn't very good.

I guess there are still many app types that aren't going to be available for the Mac anytime soon. If you hear of any others please let me know.

Supposedly Garmin recently released support for OS X. Or maybe it was just for the navigation system Tom Tom Go..... anyway, I did read something recently about it. I don't know details however.

edit add: I went and looked up a link

Let's not get too hasty here ..

First .. what EXACTLY are you (er.. your Realtor buddy) looking for?  If you want to download GPS data from a GPS, there's apps to do it. If you want Interactive voice prompts while driving, there's other apps for it.

Remember, Google / VersionTracker / MacUpdate are your friends in this regard .. Try your search on each of these places and see if there's not anything more to meet your needs.

He has a device that hooks up to his Dell notebook via USB. It captures maps information that he can see on his notebook screen while he drives and through the speaker of his notebook he can hear the directions. I don't believe he wants to buy a GPS device with a screen because of cost.

On a related subject he also wants a Mac substitute for Microsoft's Streets and Trips.

Thanks

You should have him contact Delorme. They have an inexpensive system that I used to use back when OS8 was king. It's called "Street Atlas" and I think the version is up to 6. It comes with it's own bright yellow GPS receiver and the software.
One problem - I don't know if they support Mac anymore. They used to.
