Okay, so it's been out on DVD for four days... I saw it at the cheap theatre - just couldn't find the time to go sooner. I was made fun of when I cried in the theatre when they taunted Aslan on the Stone Table - I had read the book as a child and saw other versions of this movie - I KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN - it didn't matter - i was that moved! I thought the cgi was awesome on Aslan. I'm looking forward to the other six installations. i find it odd that they didn't start with the first story, but when has hollywood ever done things logically - look at Star Wars!

Ok,

Now you could have fooled me...I have never read the book/series.  What part of the book series encompassed the first movie?

The first book is: The Magician's Nephew
The second book was what this movie was based on: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
The rest are: The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Final Battle
A good website I've found for info on the books (without the "purchase" hype) would be:
http://books.narnia.com/chronicles/books/index.html
I believe I've only read the second book, now that I look at the others... I'm looking forward to seeing the movies and reading the books.
Did you know, Mike, that C.S. Lewis was friends with J.R. Tolkien and Tolkien actually criticized Lewis for using different mythologies in his stories.
It was interesting turning on the pop ups and watching the DVD again - lots of interesting facts.

well, I'm not going to ruin it for you, but it is the professor Digory (as a boy) and his neighbor Polly. the third book has peter, susan and edmund's cousin in it (oh and lucy) but one of them isn't in it...
I'm loaning the DVD to my neighbor tomorrow, if I have it back by Tuesday's meeting, sure!

The new Narnia movie is awesome -- they really did a good job with it. The little girl that plays Lucy steals every scene that she is in, and the casting of Tilda Swinton as the White Witch was inspired.

It's been a long time since I've read the books, but in the old anthology I've got, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is the first book, and the Magician's Nephew is the last book presented as a sort of prequel. I guess it was published last but the events in it take place before Lion, Witch & Wardrobe.  Without giving too much away, it tells the story of the founding/creation of Narnia and how the White Witch and the lampost came to be introduced there.

Are they really going to make all the books into movies in this franchise?  That's terrific news. I wonder if they'll do Magicians' Nephew next, since it takes place first, or if they'll skip it on go on the next book that takes place after Lion, Witch and Wardrobe?
