Mail prefs wont save

I have had a long time issue with the prefs of my Mail program. 

I will go into the advanced prefs and check the box that sets my mail to be deleted immediately after download.  Life will be good for about a week or so then for no reason I can figure out it unchecks itself.  I'll know this when I get a message from my server saying I have too much there or if I check my email on my desktop and I get a bunch of mail I downloaded the day or two before. 

I have done this little drill of rechecking the box and saving ATLEAST twenty or more times. 

Any ideas what to do?

If this is for an IMAP account, that setting might not work.  At least that's my experience.  Online boxes just behave differently than POP.
